By Direction

Departures vs Arrivals — they're not the same

Allowance is set by the country you're entering, not the country you're leaving. Use the right card for your direction of travel.

Outbound · Leaving India

Departures Allowance

If you're flying out of Delhi International Airport (Terminal 3), your duty-free purchase is governed by the arrival allowance of your destination country, plus any in-flight or transit airport limits along the way.

  • Stay within the destination country's per-passenger limits for liquor, tobacco and goods.
  • Liquor and tobacco are sealed in a tamper-evident STEB bag with a printed receipt visible inside.
  • Keep the STEB bag sealed across connections — opening it before final destination invalidates the seal.
  • Carry-on size and lithium-cell rules of the operating airline always apply.
  • Some destinations restrict specific categories (dry-state alcohol bans, agricultural goods, etc.).
Inbound · Returning to India

Arrivals Allowance

Travellers arriving into India can purchase duty-free at the arrivals zone before customs clearance, within the personal allowance set under Indian customs rules.

  • Alcohol: 2 litres total of wine, spirits or beer (age 21+).
  • Tobacco: 100 cigarettes or 25 cigars or 125 g of loose tobacco (age 18+).
  • Goods: ₹50,000 per adult (₹15,000 per child under 12) on non-neighbouring routes.
  • Allowances are per passenger — they cannot be combined or transferred between travellers.
  • Anything beyond your allowance must be declared to customs at the Red Channel.

Indian Arrivals — Category Limits

The reference limits below apply to adult travellers arriving into India from non-neighbouring countries. Limits for travellers from Nepal, Bhutan or Myanmar (overland) are different.

Personal Allowance — Adult Indian Arrivals

Always confirm the latest rule with the Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs (CBIC), and use the live allowance check at our checkout for your specific route.

By Traveller Type

Allowance Adjusts to You

The same flight, two different travellers — they may not have the same allowance. Here's how the rules adjust.

Indian Residents

  • Adult Indian residents enjoy the full ₹50,000 goods allowance plus liquor / tobacco entitlement on arrival from non-neighbouring countries.
  • Reduced ₹15,000 goods allowance applies for adults arriving from Nepal, Bhutan or Myanmar (overland).
  • Returning after a long stay abroad? You may qualify for transfer-of-residence concessions for personal effects.

Foreign Tourists

  • Same liquor (2 L) and tobacco (100 sticks / 25 cigars / 125 g) entitlement as Indian adults; age limits identical.
  • Goods allowance of ₹15,000 per adult tourist for personal effects.
  • Used personal effects (clothes, toiletries, gadgets in personal use) are typically not counted toward the goods allowance.

Children & Minors

  • Children under 12 receive a goods allowance of ₹15,000 per child for non-neighbouring routes.
  • Children have no entitlement for liquor (any age below 21) or tobacco (any age below 18) — these limits cannot be shared from a parent.
  • Items pooled across family members do not increase per-child or per-parent limits.

Crew Members

  • Operating airline crew members travel under separate allowance rules, typically more restrictive than tourists.
  • Always check your airline's standing operating procedure before purchasing.
  • Crew duty-free entitlements often include limited cigarettes only and minimal alcohol.
Watch-Outs

Restricted & Prohibited Items

Some items are limited even within your allowance, and some cannot be carried at all. Always check airline and destination country rules before you pack.

Generally Prohibited on International Flights

  • Fresh meat, dairy products and cooked food (varies by destination biosecurity rules).
  • Plants, seeds and untreated agricultural produce.
  • Wildlife products — ivory, coral, restricted skin or fur.
  • Counterfeit goods and infringing branded merchandise.
  • Narcotics, psychotropic substances and prescription drugs without valid prescription.
  • Weapons, ammunition and inflammable hazardous goods.

Restricted / Declarable Categories

  • Gold (in any form) above the duty-free entitlement of returning Indian residents requires declaration and duty.
  • Silver in non-personal-jewellery form is duty-bearing beyond limits.
  • Currency above USD 5,000 in notes (or USD 10,000 in total instruments) must be declared.
  • High-value electronics, used or new, may be subject to duty above the goods allowance.
  • Drones and certain wireless devices may need import authorisation.
  • Satellite phones, walkie-talkies and certain radio equipment.

Tips for a Smooth Customs Walk

Stay Within Limits

  • Use the live allowance display in our cart — it adjusts to your exact route and traveller profile.
  • If you're flying with family, plan purchases per traveller — limits don't pool.
  • Save the order receipt and keep it accessible for the customs walk.

Sealed Bag & Connections

  • Always keep the STEB bag sealed until final destination — broken seals invalidate liquor / tobacco.
  • For long connections, check that your transit airport accepts STEB bags from your origin.
  • The receipt printed inside the STEB bag may be reviewed by transit security — keep it visible.

The Customs Walk

  • Within allowance? Use the Green Channel — usually no inspection needed.
  • Above allowance? Use the Red Channel and declare for duty assessment.
  • Honest declaration is always cheaper than an undeclared excess that gets caught.

When in Doubt

  • Refer to the Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs (CBIC) for the latest baggage rules.
  • Speak to our duty-free counter team — we deal with allowance questions daily.
  • Browse our FAQs or contact support before your trip.
